VORR Survey Due by July 25, 2020

The RM of Lac du Bonnet has formed a Committee to look at Waterway Safety. The Committee is made up of 3 Residents, 2 RCMP, The Economic Development Officer, 1 Seasonal Resident and the Deputy Reeve from the RM of Alexander. The task is to collect information from the public and make some recommendations to the RM of Lac du Bonnet by August 11th. The RM of Alexander is doing the same as we are. Alexander has the bulk of Pinawa Bay in their jurisdiction. They will also apply this to Bird River. Both waterways are narrow and there is an increase in the size of boats over the last 10 or so years. A survey was done in 1988 when vessels like Jet Ski, Pontoon and Wake Boats were not around not to mention back then the largest motor was only 40 H.P.

The Committee is call the VORR Committee; a Transport Canada Term which stands for Vessel Operator Regulation Restrictions. Transport Canada has full jurisdiction of all Waterways in Canada.

The RM Council will take the Committee suggestions and decide if there is enough data to submit an application to Transport Canada to put some restrictions in place. That must be at Transport Canada by August 31, 2020 in order for Transport Canada to evaluate the information we provide and decide if Regulation Restrictions will be put in place. The process with Transport Canada can take up to 12 months.

The RM of Lac du Bonnet’s website has a link that will take you to a Survey. If you could notify all your members to go onto our website www.lacdubonnet.com and fill out a survey it will help us keep our waterways safe. You can also use this link http://rmoflacdubonnet.com/p/vorr

There will also be three Open Houses held with the first on June Wednesday 24 at the R.M. Office 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The second will be Friday July 10 at Osprey Boat Launch (Granite Hills) 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

The third and final will be Saturday July 25 at the Fernwood Boat Launch Picnic Shelter 9:00 to 11:00 am.

2020 Annual Membership

Each year we collect dues from our members at the annual general meeting held in April. Membership fees are used to keep our beach area, maintenance shed and boat launch area in top shape. As well,  several events throughout the cottage season are hosted to bring our community together in fun, informal ways.

If you are unable to attend the annual general meeting, you may pay for dues ($50) and get a key for the boat launch by  contacting:

    • Mike Boultbee at 13 Samuel Hearne
    • Phone: 204-470-8599

While down at the boat launch / beach area:

  • Please park ATVs & golf carts in designated areas – NOT near the boat launch or docks to allow vehicles with trailers and boats room to turn around and access the launch.

Thanks to everyone who helps out with beach maintenance, grass cutting and special projects.
